RIM Releases BBM 6 To The Masses With App Integration

The best part of the BlackBerry OS just got a bit better, as RIM today announced the release of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) version 6. What’s more, the company plans to offer certain apps featuring BBM integration, so users can feed their texting addiction without having to close an app.

BBM-integrated apps include FourSquare, Score Mobile, Wikitude, and the Huffington Post app, along with a few more that can be found here in the BlackBerry App World. You’ll have to install BBM 6 to use any of the new apps. As more and more apps integrate BBM 6, users will then be able to share the content they love in real-time for free, whether its planning to check out a movie or chatting up the latest breaking news.

This should really be a boost to the App World in general now that users will be able to browse friends’ apps on their BBM profiles. But first RIM needs to court developers through what’s looking to be a rather tedious process. From a developer standpoint, you must first use the BBM Social Platform SDK to pull BBM into your app. It shouldn’t be too tough to convince developers into this since many will be adding a social element to their apps for the first time, or at the very least in a new way.

However, RIM is in the middle of a massive transition to the QNX platform, which means that developers who are spending extra time and manpower on hooking up BBM will have to go through the same process again in a few months. That is where RIM will struggle to grow the App World.

RIM acquires Tungle to bolster cloud calendar services

Research In Motion on Wednesday announced its acquisition of social calendar service provider Tungle. Tungle runs a like-named service that allows users to maintain a cloud-based calendar where events and schedules can easily be shared with contacts. The solution works across a variety of mobile and desktop platforms.

”BlackBerry is a fantastic solution for connecting users to the people and information that matter most throughout their day,” said RIM’s VP of Collaboration and Social Networking, Tom Goguen, in a statement. ”By working with Tungle to add cloud-based, cross-platform calendar capabilities to the BlackBerry platform we can further enrich our customers’ experience with BlackBerry and continue to help them get things done.”

Dropbox for BlackBerry updated to v1.0.37

Over the weekend, Dropbox managed to squeeze out a new update for its BlackBerry users. v1.0.37 is now available for download via the Dropbox website and looking at the change log should address a lot of users issues with connections and permissions that were seen in previous builds. Oddly enough though, the change log actually looks unchanged from the last release so we’re guessing they just fixed the underlying bugs within those changes.

  • saving non-ascii texts results in garbled text
  • handling of edge cases when running out of space on sd card and in device memory
  • open-edit-upload usecase wasn’t working for devices with encryption enabled
  • share link freezes for some users
  • open-edit-upload usecase fails for files with non-ascii filenames
  • “would you like to allow logging” dialog shouldn’t appear on first launch
  • on rotatable devices, in image gallery, the displayed/cached image is smaller than screen size (shouldn’t happen)
  • app should ask for permissions in advance on first launch
  • app should support multiple third-party app associations for a given file type (e.g multiple pdf viewers)
  • music/video stops when screen fades out
  • user gets a “not enough room to write file” message when trying to open a file that’s already open in docs2go

If you’re having issues with your current build of Dropbox, the latest forums build download is suggested so be sure to grab it as soon as possilbe.
