BlackBerry Bold 9930 Review

I confess, when RIM first unveiled the BlackBerry Bold 9900 I wanted one. It was pure unadulterated lust for the best keyboard in the business, and the smartphone looked every bit as high quality and stylish as the iPhone 4 (but RIM-style). And there was nostalgia: like many of you, I was a BlackBerry user and still have fond memories of the original Bold 9000 on AT&T. The phone was better than anything else on the market for messaging, it was fast and it had a lovely industrial design. But the world has moved on since the Bold 9000 circa 2008. Large touch screens dominate, app stores from Apple and Google have made it easy and fun to get hundreds of thousands of apps, and many smartphone platforms handle email (including push email) and messaging well. How does RIM’s latest Bold hold up?

For this review we’re using the Bold 9930 on Verizon Wireless, though the phone is also available on Sprint. The “30″ at the end of the number indicates the cell radio technology, so Sprint and Verizon have the 9930, while AT&T, T-Mobile, Rogers and other GSM carriers have the BlackBerry Bold 9900. Other than carrier customizations and the cellular radio, the Bold 9900 and 9930 are the same phone. In fact, the Verizon 9930 also supports GSM 3G HSDPA (overseas 900/2100MHz bands only) for world roaming. It has a SIM card slot and comes with the usual Vodafone SIM card. For use in the US on Verizon’s network, the phone has 1xRTT and 3G EV-DO Rev. A. Read more

T-Mobile rolls out BlackBerry OS 6 for Bold 9700

At long last, it seems that T-Mobile has finally rolled out the BlackBerry OS 6 for its BlackBerry Bold 9700 smartphone, although this piece of news did not come from an official spokesperson over at T-Mobile.

The update hasn’t yet gone live on their website at press time, although Bold 9700 owners who connect to BlackBerry Desktop on their PCs shouldn’t have any problems with the update’s installation process. We do know that the release build is version 6.0.0.448, and what makes this special is that it is the first version of OS 6 made available to Bold 9700 users via T-Mobile.

Not sure what to get the person who already has too much for Christmas this year? You may want to check out the Exclusive Limited Edition Bill Amberg BlackBerry Bold 9780 collection, available from Selfridges this December. Here’s the official word on them:

To celebrate the launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 luxury leather designer Bill Amberg has created a BlackBerry collection which will be sold exclusively at Selfridges London from 1 December.

The 60 limited edition Bill Amberg sets, priced at £1000 each, include a BlackBerry Bold 9780, a backplate and sleek matching leather case and are available in six unique colour ways – yellow on black, orange on black, red on black, pink on white, blue on white and green on white.

To get hold of an iconic BlackBerry Bold 9780 designed by Bill Amberg head to the Technology Hall on the Lower Ground Floor from 1 December.

I gotta say, as much as I’m a sucker for the notion of limited edition swiss mechanical watches, somehow the concept of seeing 1/10 or 5/10 on the back of a smartphone doesn’t quite yield the same sort of emotion for me. The two-tone battery doors are pretty hawt though. It would be nice to see an accessory manufacturer do up something similar in that $15 – $30 price range. More info and images at the link below. Thanks to Dave for sending this in!

Red BlackBerry Bold 9780 Spotted

Just the other week, the BlackBerry Bold 9780 was officially announced. As more carriers announce that they will be carrying the Bold 9780, more information continues to trickle out. Not long ago, we saw the first red Bold 9780 hit Craigslist, but it was suggested to be a fraud.

However, this red Bold 9780 is very much real, but looks to be an early pre-release device. It will be interesting to see how many color variants come out for the Bold 9780, given it has the exact same form factor as the original Bold 9700. Do you like the red color?

Here is a nice video of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 in red:

T-Mobile gets first BlackBerry Bold with OS 6

T-Mobile joins AT&T and Sprint in announcing a BlackBerry running Research In Motion’s new and improved operating system, OS 6. But instead of being a new design, this updated phone is none other than the best-selling BlackBerry Bold. T-Mobile said Wednesday it will sell the BlackBerry Bold 9780 with OS 6 starting Nov. 17. The phone will cost $129.99 after a two year-contract.

Why is OS 6 a big deal? Anyone who’s used a BlackBerry knows, yes, it’s reliable and generally has great security, but it can be kludgy and slow compared to some of the sleeker, more fluid operating systems on competing phones. OS 6 has a new Web browser based on WebKit, the same engine used by Apple and Google. It’s much faster than its painfully slow and frustrating predecessor.

The hallmark of the new OS is universal search, something that also is already offered on the iPhone, Android and Palm devices. It lets users search their devices by keyword to find anything on the device — in e-mail, contacts or music, for example — to that keyword. All in all, the new OS is a friendlier experience.

In August, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion and AT&T had a gala unveiling of the BlackBerry Torch. The first RIM phone to use the new operating system, the Torch resembles a Palm Pre with its slide-out keyboard. Subsequently, Sprint and RIM announced the BlackBerry Style, the first flip phone running a BlackBerry OS. T-Mobile is the first to show off a more standard-issue BlackBerry, though Verizon is apparently close on T-Mo’s heels with an OS 6-equipped BlackBerry Bold of its own.

T-Mobile’s Bold 9780 is not a touchscreen model, like the Torch. The new Bold has a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and video recording. It uses a 624 MHz processor, has 512 MB of internal memory and support for up to 32 GB with a 2GB memory card included, says T-Mobile.

T-Mobile is full of surprises. Its last announcement T-Mobile G2 was really great. The new device is a successor to the first Android device, the G1. T-Mobile G2 review gives the fullest information about the device.
